TEFL Courses at CMU Language Institute
Our four week, 120 hour course offers university standard instruction to native or near-native speakers of English. The LICMU TEFL Certificate program provides trainees the skills necessary for teaching EFL/ESL to learners throughout the world.
In addition to theories of ESL, the course is very focused on practical, hands-on experience. Beginning in the first week of the course, our trainees teach (under the guidance of highly skilled trainers) ESL classes to local students in local Thai schools. The course has two main components: Input Sessions, which involves information about methodology and language awareness; and Teaching Practicum.
Methodology
The input sessions contain practical ideas about teaching and language learning theory. Trainees will participate in group and pair discussion, as well as attend lectures on various topics pertaining to teaching.
Language Awareness
This will cover two main areas of language awareness. The first is grammar. Input sessions cover word classes, simple sentence elements, complex sentences and clauses, verb time and tense, aspect and conditionals and modals, phrasal and voice. The second area is phonology. Candidates can be expected to learn about phonemics, word stress and intonation, sentence stress and intonation, rhythm and intonation and connected speech.

Do I need to be a native English speaker to study TEFL?
| You do not need to be a native speaker to enroll in the TEFL course. Many of our non native speaking graduates have secured jobs in positions ranging from the university level to top tier government schools. If you would like to have your English speaking skills assessed, we are happy to arrange a phone interview. |
What are the course dates & when do i study?
Our TEFL Courses run monthly usually beginning around the start of each month. Tuition is Monday to Friday from 9am until 5pm with a break over the weekends.

How do i enroll for the course?

You are also welcome to come down to the language institute at Chiang Mai University and enroll directly. |
What are the course fee's?
| The tuition fee for the TEFL program is 48,000 baht. This covers the cost of tuition, course material and certification. All of our students are eligible visa assistance but his fee is not covered in tuition fee's.

I have been hired in Khon Kaen at a Private Catholic school for the summer program and for next term 2010-2011. I was one of 8 applicants to the school but the only CMU TEFL certificate holder. Seems there is truth in your statement that a CMU TEFL certificate carries more weight than most others. I did a demo class using the skills learned in your program and it went over extremely well. The school director, a Catholic priest, was in attendance and personally issued the directive that I should be offered the position. The school is fairly large, 3000 students, and should provide a good source of experience. Despite not be a degree holder and a Thai national, I'm living proof that it IS possible to find good employment as an EFL teacher. Chiang Mai University Language Institute 120 hour/4 week TEFL Program
I agree that:
a. My deposit is due no later than 1 week before the course commences and that it is non-refundable.
b. Once a trainee has commenced and started a program, the tuition fee cannot be refunded.
c. The balance of my enrollment fees is due before the commencement of the first day of classes, and that my enrolment fees are non-refundable
d. Should I choose to withdraw from the program (once commenced) that there will be a minimum re-enrollment fee of 15,000 Baht for any subsequent program.
e. The Chiang Mai University Language Institute has the right to cancel the enrolment of any student who is:
- Disruptive in classAppears to present a risk to anyone involved in the program
- Under the influence of alcohol, drugs or any other banned substances
- Engages in behavior that is contrary to the ideals and interests of the course
f. No Thai Visa or Thai work permit is implied, guaranteed, or secured by my enrolment in the Chiang Mai University Language Institute TEFL program.
g. I will maintain the Chiang Mai University dress code policy for CMU teachers and students

j. The Chiang Mai University Language Institute reserves the right to
- Change/alter the syllabus/curriculum as deemed necessary at anytime
- Change/alter the schedule/timetable
- Cancel the program
- Withdraw discount/free offers at the discretion of the Course Director
- Change/alter final certificate completion
- Without recourse from the enrolled student.
